Walking Down Memory Lane

Shared by Ken Martin

Walking Down Memory Lane • It was September 1969 • Political Science class at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck N.J. • I was researching my favorite subject, the scratch sheet from Yonkers Raceway • I met Eddie, who had a similar interest in the ponies • We decided right there and then, as Rick said to Louie at the end of Casa Blanca, “This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship” • He was the one who gave me my nickname name “Sach” • We spent the next 3 years playing sports, cutting class • Nights hanging out in the dorms • Drinking at the Deer Head and later at the Gaslight • The maniac raids • His 21st Birthday • One I will never forget… and one he’ll never remember • Graduation • Robert Hall • The Big L (and the cigarette runs) • The house in Englewood • The MetLife years • Hearts at lunchtime • Munks Park, Mitchells, The Abbey Tavern, The Glocca Morra” Rascals, Live Bait, The 23rd Street Grille…I’ll stop here • Meeting and dating Pat • Their wedding (where one of our college friends took an axe handle to a guy who cut him off on the way to the reception) • The Bergen Blues • Kristen and Tommy’s births • So much more…even I feel this may be TMI • I’ll let the Grateful Dead sum it up…”what a long, strange trip it’s been” • Happy Birthday Mr. Hood!!! Always your friend, Sach

Eddie and I met in the early 1970's at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) in Teaneck, NJ and have remained friends ever since (56 years). We played endless basketball, had epic card games and spent many days and nights at our local pub called the Gaslight. Happy birthday my friend and hopefully you have many more. Attached below is a picture of Eddie outside the dorms in the FDU days. Tommy Cleeland or Clee bird as Eddie sometimes calls me

This memory is a tribute to Eddie's old friend from college, Rich Ducoff (Duke) who passed away last year. Duke and Eddie spoke many times over the years but Duke always called him on his birthday. So Eddie this is Dukes birthday call to you from above and I am sure he is looking down on all of us. His favorite part of the year (NCAA BB tournament) was coming up and Eddie & Toomy always helped him with the pool. Attached is a picture of Duke from our college years. Tommy Cleeland

Friday Evenings at Monk's Park

Shared by Rocko and Julie

After work we would all go to Monk's Park (a local MetLife hangout) to unwind and have fun. Ed would join me ( and others ) singing "You Light Up My Life" a popular song at the time. To enhance the atmosphere, Ed would light matches in sync with the words "You light up". We had lots of fun nights there that I will always remember. It's where Ed met Patty. Often our group was the last to depart and Ed was left to settle the bill. Happy, happy Birthday Ed 🎂 🥳 🎉 🎈 Wishing you good health and happiness xo Juliette and Rocko

There is no specific memory for Ed. All my time with him is always Great! I know Ed now for about 15 years and my first conversation with him was definitely something about a sporting event at the time. Could've been The Yankees, The Giants, or Notre Dame. Either way, I knew he was my type of guy. We also collaborated in changing out our Board several years ago, as well as being members of The Finance Committee. Eddy Cares! He cares about people and the wellbeing of the community. He's the first to welcome new people in the Community and finds out what sports they want to get involved in, and makes sure the Guy joins the Men’s Club. He's been a fixture and Key contributor to The Men’s Club for many years. Ed only speaks when he has something to say. He doesn't talk, "just to talk"! He doesn't Bullshit, but says what's needed to be said. When there's anything going on in the Community, regardless of the issue, Ed is one of those people that others look at for advice or an opinion. Ed is not only a Great Athlete, but more importantly, a Great Sportsman. He’s always the voice of reason and is involved in all activities here. Eddy's Fucking Awesome! I'm proud and lucky to be his Friend! Here's to the next 75 Years!

I was one of the younger (and luckier) cousins who grew up with summers down the shore in Avalon with my mom, dad Aunt Pat and Uncle Ed. We spent Friday nights getting pizza and then going to get ice cream and listen to the famous Tommy Zito! I’ll always remember Uncle Ed requesting Puff the Magic Dragon every week! I miss those summer nights and will cherish the memories of playing password and giggling with Uncle Ed! Happy 75th birthday! Love you Uncle Ed❤️

I have something important to ask you...

Shared by Mike Righetti (son-in-law)

On a beautiful summer evening in June of 2017, the Dietrich-Donovan-Henderson family reunion at Lake Tahoe was in full-swing, and everyone seemed at ease as we gathered at Dollar Point beach for a family barbecue. I, on the other hand, was nervous as-can-be because I had something to get off my chest with Ed. You see, I intended to ask his daughter to marry me, but I had not yet conjured up the courage to ask him for his approval. And it wasn't clear to me that he did in fact approve. There were a few things we had in common (general interest in sports, of course), but there was just as much that we did not (healthy eating and physical fitness habits, for example), which became increasingly evident after spending the week together in a small cabin. But I had decided that the family barbecue would be where I would make my pitch, so while the Dietrichs, Donovans and Hendersons ate, drank, and laughed with one another, I was sweating bullets. My opportunity presented itself when I saw everyone venture out to the pier for a family photo. I quickly snagged two long-neck Coors Lights and intercepted my future father-in-law before he could join them. I remember telling him that I had something important to ask him, to which he chuckled, because he knew very well what was coming. I don’t remember what I said next, but I distinctly recall the relief that overwhelmed me when he casually said “yes.” Of course, he then started peppering me for all the details about when and where and how he would get the message to Pat without spilling the beans. But it all worked out in the end I suppose, because he threw what many still call, “the Great Wedding Ever.” I’ll never forget that afternoon at Dollar Point. Happy Birthday, Ed!

As President of our Men's Club at Four Seasons, I can't thank Ed enough for his time as Secretary and Events Chairman. As Secretary he wrote terrific newsletter articles about our Breakfast-Meetings and took detailed information to create our Board Meeting Minutes. As Events Chairman, he scheduled and arranged for some terrific baseball games throughout Southeast Florida, as well as taking charge of our two semi-annual Golf Outings. On top of all that, Ed is a terrific friend, and that's probably the most important thing I can say about my relationship with Ed Dietrich. Happy birthday Ed!

It was great to take Ed to buy his dream car a brand new 2026 Corvette. When we walked into the dealership and he looked at every corvette on the showroom floor, undecided on which model and color, he had a great smile. Then Ed test drove one and when he came back into the showroom and finally ordered his Silver with Red interior 2026 Corvette his smile and face lit up. On the way home he said to me he always dreamed of owning one, but he had his family to support and that was his first priority. Well Ed your dream has become a reality, and I hope you enjoy your new car for many years to come.
